Want to join as a beginner in 2020? See here!

We welcome anyone from the University of Kent - student or staff - with open arms!

Are you interested in learning to row? Have you rowed before? Do you want to cox? Or something else?

I want to learn to row from scratch!

We’re more than happy to teach you! Most rowers fall in love with the sport at university - it’s a great way to try something new, meet new people, and get out and about. As well as learning a new skill and getting fitter, you will form friendships that last for life.

In our dedicated novice programme, you’ll be learning to row alongside other beginners, with oversight from our coaches and experienced coxswains (who will lead you and steer your boat) - don’t worry, you won’t fall in! You will be rowing regularly with the same “crew” of eight, progressing to your first races towards the end of winter term.

You’ll also be joining a vibrant community, with a wide range of social events: from post-training pub and restaurant trips, to weekly socials, to our annual Winter Ball and Summer Ball.

If you have any questions or just want to register your interest, get in touch and ask to speak to our Novice Rowing Captain(s).

I want to carry on rowing!

Get in touch and ask for our Senior Rowing Captain(s). Whether you’ve just been paddling with a group of friends or competing at national events, we’re eager to hear from you.

Row in VIIIs with the University of Kent Rowing Club

We focus on sweep IVs and VIIIs, competing throughout the year at head events such as Cambridge Winter Head and (Women’s) Head of the River Race, and indoor events such as BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Indoor Championships and the British Rowing Indoor Championships. In the spring, we turn our attention to BUCS Regatta, Reading Regatta and more - with the ultimate aim of competing at the Henley regattas.

You’ll receive coaching both individually and in your crew, with dedicated land and water training programmes. No matter your experience level, we have just the thing for you!

I want to cox!

Get in touch and ask for our Coxing Captain. The coxswain has the critical role of leading the rowers and steering the boat - a good cox can really take a crew to the next level.

If you have never coxed before, we will teach you! You’ll receive dedicated one-on-one coaching with an experienced crew in a safe environment, before progressing to take on your own crew once you’re ready. If you’re already an assertive person, this could be the role for you - if not, coxing is the perfect way to help!

I’d like to do something else!

If you have experience as a coach or boatman (or anything else!) and are interested in helping out, we’d love to hear from you! Get in touch and ask for our President.
