Races 2009/10

The club made the familiar trip up to Bedford on the 12th June for the Star Regatta hosted by Star Rowing Club and saw three crews come back with winners pots. The Women' Double claimed victory in the Women's Intermediate 2 Double, defeating a Star crew in the final. The Women's First four also brushed aside a Star crew in both their Semi final and Women's Intermediate 3 Coxed Four Final to claim their seventh victory of the year. The Men's Pair had a slightly easier victory, not having to qualify for their final in which they beat Bedford School in the Men's Intermediate 2 Pair. The pair competed in the Intermediate 1 race, where they lost in the final to City of Oxford. All three crews added another point to their British Rowing card with all of them now at Intermediate 2 status.

Perhaps the biggest story of the day was the success of the Development crews. The Men's Development crew got through tricky heats against Champion of the Thames and Norwich School to reach an unexpected final. However a suprise point was not to be as St.Edwards School were too strong, taking the Men's Novice Coxed Four pot. The Women's Development also got through a heat, albeit via walkover, to reach their final, where St.Edwards School were again the victors. Despite the disappointment, getting a British Rowing point too early in your rowing development can often be a hinderance, and with both crews remaining Novice status, they can expect to compete well in Head races at Novice level over the coming year.

Elsewhere, newly elected Women's Captain Sarah Harvey showed her remarkable spirit by competing in the Women's Novice Scull catagory as well as her Double race. She defeated a one sculler from Star to reach the Semi, only to come up short against another, failing to make what would have been a second final of the day! Congratulations to all the crews that competed, and commiserations on missing Artsfest. It was AMAZING!
