Plucks Marathon
18th September 2011

Sunday 18th September saw plucks play host to its first rowing marathon. Despite the initial disappointment of Boston’s cancellation, one crew from Kent Rowing were still determined to complete the distance, raising money for the charity ‘PorchLight’

The crews had been training hard for two weeks before it was announced that the Boston marathon could not take place this year. This was due to increased weed growth in the river making it too dangerous for racing. Having already begun fundraising for the local charity ‘PorchLight’ crews were faced with the difficult decision of leaving the challenge for another year or covering the distance simply for their own personal achievement.

Not having the hype and adrenaline of a race will have only made the 50K all the more gruelling. But even with this additional mental hurdle the rowers, Daniel Westwood, Lawson Emanuel, Carl Soan and Tom Shepherd, did fantastically well completing the distance in a respectful five hours. They put their all into the marathon and were determined to complete the whole distance.

‘The boys did excellent together. Even when tired they were making good catches and nice clean finishes. There were moments when they were getting tired that they would loose their technique but they would notice and bring it back in the next three strokes. Even though it was a painful five hours it was nice spending it with all of them, they did excellently.’ Charlotte Riding, Cox.
