Medway Head of the River
Maidstone, 22nd February 2009
The University of Kent Rowing Club saw success over the 2.5km race along the Medway in Maidstone, its first race since Boston. With the three Coxed Four and Amy Hills in the Single Scull all putting in action rows, the club was hopeful of success at one of the smaller races during the year.
The Men’s Coxed Four of Jamie Edwards, Steve Cooper, Mile Halahan and Sam Webb, coxed by Cat Pateman, achieved a respectable time of 9:12 – the sixth fastest time of the day from a hundred and eleven – but were only able to finish third from their field of four in the Men’s Senior 3 Coxed Four category. The crew recently changed the rigging of their boat, Palamon, to be bow rigged, and after the race they said the race was very helpful in finding the best combination.
Amy Hills, who has seen considerable success along the Medway in previous years, continued her love affair with this race, defending her Senior 4 Single. Scull victory from last year. Amy looked good on the river, and her time of 11.24 was enough to take first place, and give her a lot of confidence ahead of Bedford and BUCS
The Women’s Coxed Four of Lucy Archer, Emily Iles, Sarah Fish and Briony Rose, coxed by Carmelia Paramasivan put in a fantastic row and thought they had victory within their grasps. However victory was cruelly denied by a single second, as their time of 10:18 was bettered by a Maidstone Invicta crew’s time of 10:17. Despite their frustration, the girls should me pleased with their effort.
There was no disappointment for the Men’s Coxed Four of Dave Lim, James Cooper, Ben Rowan and Rich Franklin, coxed by Jen Fisher who stormed to victory in the Mens’ Novice Coxed Four category. Their time of 9:23 was the ninth fastest of the whole day, and first in their category. It was the first victory for everyone in the crew, and they were thrilled to pick up their medals at the end of the days racing. Congratulations to guys!
