Novice Head
Plucks, Sunday 11th December 2011

December 11th marked the beginning of this year’s intercollegiate competition.
With more novices joining the club than ever before the day was set to be jam packed full of races. 12 men’s crews and 8 women’s meant there would be 40 races to squeeze into the day. Unsurprisingly the meet was horribly early; 5.45am for some and 6.45am for most. Despite this the day was well supported with over 100 people milling around at plucks.
Matt Lane did a fabulous job of ensuring the races had quick turnarounds keeping everyone busy and occupied. The day really did not disappoint. It was brilliant to see how much all the novices had improved in such a short amount of time, particularly seeing as this year’s intake had half the amount of time on the water than in previous years. There were so many strong crews which really showed how much hard work had been put in and how determined so many of the novices are to succeed in the sport.
Congratulations go to Rutherford Men’s 2nd, coxed by Lawson Emanuel and crewed by Tom Protheroe, Magnus McAuley, Jack Cuthbertson and Killian Connolly. And congratulations to Keynes Women’s 1st coxed by Cathy Lawless and crewed by Lauren Ellis, Susannah Byles-Walters, Monifa Tompson and Natacha Woodcock.
And final congratulations to all who took part in the races. There was a great competitive spirit throughout the day and in the overall lead up to Novice Head. Such a great day of racing has created an exciting end to the term as the club looks set to go from strength to strength in the New Year.
