The Inter College competition is an annual event between the Universities four colleges, Eliot, Rutherford, Darwin and Keynes. It consists of three separate days of racing, one in each term. They are organised by the Novice Coordinator, Sarah Moseley. The Novice Head, the first intercollegiate race is one of the most important and exciting days in the Club's calendar. Entry is strictly for novices only, as the newest members of the club battle it out to take the Novice Head trophy for their college following ten weeks of training.
The following two intercollegiate races are open to all club members and are still of importance to the club. The Spring and Summer races are more relaxed than the Novice Head, but don't think this means these races are seen as been easy. When there is chance to make your college proud, everyone digs a little deeper and pushes that bit harder. Each Intercollegiate features a Men's race, Women's race, Composite race (two men and two women) and a Coxes race.
Novice Head
Plucks, Sunday 12th December 2010
At dawn on the 12th December, this year’s Novice Crews headed to the river. They had been training hard for 3 months and were now to face the 650m on which they would compete in a battle to decide who would be crowned Novice Head champions 2010. Supporters lined the banks ready to cheer for their college. Ordinarily each crew would race twice, but this year due to breakages on the day the crews were forced to adapt and race only once; now everything would rest on one race.
Showing excellent resilience the crews raced, and guided by their coxes, all crews competed with no further casualties to people or boats. For the first time in the history of Kent Rowing the Men’s cup was a tie between Eliot Men’s 1st and Darwin Men’s 1st with a time of 3.09. The Women’s cup was taken by Rutherford Women’s 1st with a time of 4.16. They were coxed by James Stokes who in a double win was also awarded ‘Coach of the Year’. James has showed a continued willingness and ability to coach novice crews, as well as kindness in his support of crews other than his own.
Special congratulations to all the winners and well done to all that participated.
