Cambridge Head

November 19th 2011

Cambridge Head marked the beginning of the winter rowing season for the University of Kent’s rowing club.

Five of the club’s racing crews met at 5.30am to make the journey to Cambridge. Four men’s fours were entered and one women’s four. Everyone had been working hard in preparation, training at weekends and during the week putting them in a good position to take on the competition.

The field was competitive in all categories but all crews gave it all they had and powered through the 2.5k.

The women's crew set off very strongly, instantly pushing away from the crew behind them. They kept a strong stroke rating of between 26-28 and at the last 500m the girls caught the crew infront and cruised on past them. "For our first race together I am very pleased with how it went." Commented Kate Tatchell, cox.

"Men's fourth had a good stroke rating of 28 and Men's second had a strong stroke rate of 30. Both crews did well I am proud of them both they both really pushed for the finish" Charlotte Riding, cox.

"M3 they had a good race. Especially the last 500m, they really picked up the pace and pushed for home. They rated 28 throughout and even took a crew at the start. All in all it was a very successful race!" Becky Dennehy, cox.

The competition proved to be a great start to the season which showed in the results with three crews coming in at medal position.

All in all it was a very successful day for all involved. Let’s hope the squad can build on the success with more wins over the winter racing season.

Again, many thanks to the guys at redbull for powering us through a day of racing!
